UK railcards: which one saves you the most?

Most national railcards cost around £30 a year and take roughly a third off most fares — so they pay for themselves in two or three journeys. The best one for you depends on who you are and how you travel. Here's a quick guide, and how a railcard stacks with off-peak travel and split ticketing for even bigger savings.

The main national railcards

There's a railcard for almost every kind of traveller. They nearly all give around a third off most fares for about £30 a year:

Every one of these gives around a third off most fares for roughly £30 a year.

How much a railcard saves

The headline figure is roughly a third off most fares. On an average journey that means a railcard usually pays for itself in about two or three trips — after that, every journey is money saved. If you travel often, a three-year option (offered on some railcards) works out cheaper per year than renewing annually.

Railcards stack with other savings

This is where the biggest savings come from. A railcard discount applies on top of an off-peak fare, and it also applies on top of each leg of a split ticket. The discounts compound: off-peak brings the base fare down, split ticketing finds the cheaper combination of segments, and the railcard then takes a third off that. Used together they can go far beyond the third-off headline.

The catch

There are a couple of things to know. Some fares carry a minimum fare or a morning-peak time restriction when a railcard discount doesn't fully apply, and the railcard must of course be valid for the person travelling. Outside those cases the discount applies normally, so for most journeys the saving is straightforward.
